We pulled our own UK keyword data on 7 July 2026 and found something no competitor has published. Searches for “ai visibility” rose from 143 a month to 1,138 in a year. The American term “generative engine optimization” collapsed here over the same period. Buyers renamed the category. Most agencies, including some selling exactly this service, have not updated a single page to match.

Key takeaways

  • UK monthly searches for “ai visibility” grew from 143 (June 2025) to 1,138 (July 2026), roughly 8x.
  • The US spelling “generative engine optimization” fell from 2,366 to 719 UK searches a month in the same window.
  • The British spelling “generative engine optimisation” held at 1,416 a month, but at keyword difficulty 62, a hard climb for a new site.
  • “Ai visibility agency” (150/mo, KD 0) and “geo agency” (700/mo, KD 3) are both wide open. Almost nobody targets either directly.
  • A counter-signal exists too: “how to remove ai from google search” gets 916 UK searches a month. Not every buyer wants more AI.

The data buyers are actually typing now

Search behaviour changes before the industry that serves it notices. Our pull, run against live UK volumes in Ahrefs on 7 July 2026, shows “ai visibility” climbing from 143 monthly searches to 1,138. That is not a niche uptick. It is a buyer segment abandoning one name for another. Meanwhile “generative engine optimization” dropped from 2,366 to 719 UK searches a month over the same year. Someone who searched that US term twelve months ago is now far more likely to type “ai visibility” instead. The category did not shrink. It got renamed, and most of the industry kept the old label.

The British spelling “generative engine optimisation” is not dying. It still holds 1,416 searches a month, more than double “ai visibility” itself. But keyword difficulty 62 means a young site has little chance against publishers who have owned the term since 2024. “Ai visibility agency” and “geo agency” are the real openings. Both carry genuine commercial intent. Neither shows up on most UK agency homepages today.

The questions buyers are actually asking

Volume alone does not tell the whole story. The same pull surfaced rising question queries sitting just behind the head terms. “What is geo in seo” gets 250 searches a month. “How to rank in ai overviews” gets 150 a month, at a cost-per-click near £7. “What is ai visibility” itself sits at 150 a month. These are people who have heard the category exists and want a plain answer first. A £7 CPC on “how to rank in ai overviews” tells you something too. Paid buyers already know this term is worth bidding on, even while organic content for it stays thin.

What this means across every engine, not just Google

The naming shift shows up in search volume first, since that is where we can measure it. The same drift is happening inside the AI engines themselves. ChatGPT holds the largest share of UK AI-assisted search. It increasingly answers “what is AI visibility” with a definition close to the buyer’s own phrasing. Claude and Gemini both surface “AI visibility” as a synonym when asked to define GEO, rather than the other way round. Perplexity leans on whichever phrase the user typed, which is now “ai visibility” more often than a year ago. Microsoft Copilot and Grok trail the shift, still defaulting to GEO in longer answers. Google’s own AI Mode and AI Overviews use neither term consistently. Google calls the relevant Search Console feature a “Generative AI report”, not an AI visibility report.

What we changed on our own site

We do not exempt ourselves from this data. Before the July pull, every service page here led with “GEO” or “generative engine optimisation” in the H1 and meta title. “AI visibility” appeared nowhere above the fold. That was defensible in 2025. It is not defensible now that “ai visibility” outsearches “generative engine optimization” in the UK by a wide margin. We have since added “AI visibility” alongside GEO in service titles, meta descriptions and the homepage H1. Neither name has been retired. Both now appear where a buyer might type either one.

Matt’s Pick

Target both terms, not one. Keep “generative engine optimisation” where you already rank for it, since KD 62 makes it expensive to win from a standing start. Add “ai visibility” and “ai visibility agency” to titles, meta descriptions and H1s now, while competition is still close to zero. The buyers asking “what is ai visibility” this month are the same buyers. Next month they search “ai visibility agency”, once the category has a name.

Frequently asked questions

What does ‘AI visibility’ mean?

How often, and how favourably, AI engines like ChatGPT and Gemini mention or cite a brand when answering real questions.

Is AI visibility different from GEO?

No. AI visibility is the outcome. GEO, generative engine optimisation, is the work that improves it.

Why did UK searches for ‘ai visibility’ grow so fast?

Buyers started typing what they wanted to measure, not the academic name for the discipline behind it.

Should I still use ‘generative engine optimisation’ on my site?

Yes, but pair it with ‘AI visibility’. The British spelling still holds real volume, but the phrase alone is not how most buyers search now.

Is ‘geo agency’ or ‘ai visibility agency’ the better term to target?

Both. ‘Geo agency’ carries more monthly searches. ‘Ai visibility agency’ has less competition. Most sites rank for neither yet.

How do I check my own brand’s AI visibility for free?

Run real buyer questions through ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. Note whether your brand is mentioned or cited.

Does Google itself use the term ‘AI visibility’?

Not officially. Google’s own Search Console tool is called a Generative AI report, not AI visibility. Buyers coined the term, not the platforms.
